Biocatalysis and Molecular Evolution

A new group with broad interest in molecular synthesis, ranging from small molecules to engineered enzymes.
We are excited to build a dynamic and interdisciplinary team to push the frontiers of synthetic chemistry, biocatalysis,
small molecule evolution and protein therapeutics.

  • Check out our report Biocatalytic, Asymmetric Radical Hydrogenation of Unactivated Alkenes, now online on ChemRxiv. A brilliant team effort lead by Jaicy and Rajib!

  • Jaicy presented a poster at ACS Fall 2025, Washington DC.

  • Soumitra presented a talk and a poster describing the latest results from the lab at GRC Protein Engineering 2025.

  • Congratulations to Justin and Kyle for passing candidacy!

  • Soumitra receives the Seaborg award from Alpha Chi Sigma and presents a lecture.

  • Congratulations to Rohan and Jessica for being awarded SURF fellowships for undergraduate summer research!

  • Congratulations to Aris Rubio (joint with Ken Houk)for passing candidacy!

  • Wishing everyone a very happy 2025 from the Athavale group!

  • Soumitra is appointed as the inaugural John D. and Edith M. Roberts Term Chair in Organic Chemistry.

  • Ethan Poladian is the recipient of the Lorraine H. and Masuo Toji Undergraduate Research Fellowship for the summer. Congratulations, Ethan!
